WHAT PEOPLE SAY

"I had been a pretty active person for most of my years.  That all changed in a big hurry for me, when I turned 50.  My energy dropped like a rock and I had a lot of joint pain. I was also depressed and very emotional.  I knew something wasn’t right and tried to talk to my regular doctor about it.  They ran some blood tests and didn’t find anything that related to my symptoms.  I decided to try to investigate the hormone side of things and found Hilary!  Hormone therapy gave me back my life again!  I now enjoy long walks and being outside with all of my critters on the acreage again!"

—  Kitty K.

"Aging is NOT an unalterable process of decline and loss. Hormones are now responsible for this change in attitude..."

FACT: We lose hormones as we age, starting as early as our 30's!

Why BHRT?

The reality of hormone replacement is that not all hormones are alike, in the way they are made, what they are made of or what they do once in our bodies. There is a vast difference between synthetic hormones and natural, bio-identical hormones.

"Bio-identical" by definition is natural, being made from plant-based ingredients. The structure of a natural hormone is identical to that made by our bodies versus synthetic hormones that are chemicals carrying dangerous side effects; hence the name "bio-identical." Your body has no way of differentiating bio-identical hormones because they are identical to the hormones produced by your body for your entire life! There is however a distinct difference between bio-identical and synthetic. Your body will recognize bio-identical hormones as "self" and synthetic hormones as "foreign." These foreign substances often cause negative physical side effects and greatly increase a woman's risk for developing cancer, among other serious side effects including heart disease, stroke and blood clots.

A lack of clear, concise, mainstream information has led to hormone therapy in general being regarded with skepticism and confusion. The Women's Health Initiative Trial (WHI) is one of the largest scale, big pharma driven reasons for this misinformation and misconception regarding hormone replacement, especially BHRT, in women and has contributed to the stigma associated with hormone replacement for both women and men alike.

The WHI was conducted to study the effects of synthetic estrogen (conjugated equine estrogen, CEE, from a pregnant horse) and progestin* (MPA) on women. *Progestin is NOT progesterone. This study ended prematurely in 2002 because of the shocking toll synthetic hormones were taking on participants- breast cancer, heart attacks, strokes, blood clots and dementia. The results of the WHI were published, shaking the medical community to the core. Providers have since avoided hormone treatments (bio-identical and synthetic alike) and widely adopted the convention "lowest dose for the shortest time to make hot flashes bearable." The other consequence that has become mainstream practice is attempting to mask symptoms with medications like anti-depressants that not only are failing to address the root cause of the symptoms but can in many cases increase symptoms like low libido, fatigue and weight fluctuations.

Thousands of scientific studies confirm that BHRT provides more than just relief of typical menopausal symptoms (hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, etc.). BHRT also offers patients protection against:

  • Heart Disease (#1 killer of women in the U.S.)

  • Osteoporosis

  • Alzheimer's Disease, Dementia & Memory Decline

  • Diabetes

  • Depression & Anxiety

  • High Cholesterol

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Arthritis

  • ADHD

  • Restless Leg Syndrome

  • Urinary Tract Infections

Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IF I'VE BEEN TAKING SYNTHETIC HORMONES?

When you come to Allure Health we will have you fill out a complete medical history. In this document you will list the current medications you are taking, including any current hormone therapies. Depending on what type and dose you are taking, you will discuss the weaning process with your provider at your first visit. Please do not abruptly stop taking any medication, hormones or otherwise, until you have consulted with a medical professional.

WHAT IF I AM ON HORMONAL BIRTH CONTROL?

This information will again, need to be listed in your medical history so your provider can discuss the options available to you. Birth control is very important and we would not do anything to render your methods ineffective! Women of all ages can experience hormone imbalances and we have options for a variety of scenarios.

WHY HAVEN'T I HEARD OF THIS FROM MY OTHER HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS?

This explanation involves the influence of "Big Pharma" on the practice of medicine in more traditional & commercialized settings. In addition, traditional medical education programs often do not include much, if any, information about more holistic and "natural" treatments. Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy is classified as such and therefore many healthcare providers simply have little to no information on how to manage, prescribe or educate their patients on their bio-identical hormone replacement options. The WHI study (discussed on the BHRT introduction page) has also essentially scared providers away from any kind of hormone therapy. But we now know, thanks to thousands of studies, that BHRT is not harmful like the synthetic counterparts but rather improves overall health and wellness in addition to managing bothersome symptoms!

The video above shows bio-identical hormone replacement therapy via pellet implant. This is a simple outpatient procedure during which the patient is numbed with lidocaine, a small incision is made and the pellets are placed in the fatty tissue below the skin and above the muscle layer. The incision is closed with closure stips (no glue or stitches!) which stay in place for approximately 5-7 days. Normal activity is allowed post-procedure with the exception of deep squatting and heavy lifting for the first few days as to not disrupt the incision or closure strips/bandage.
